FOLLOWING FROM HIS DAUGHTER PAM.......
Dear Mr. Brown,

I am sorry that it has taken me so long to get these pictures off to you.  They are a couple of more recent pictures.  Well maybe not quite that recent.  The holiday picture is within the last couple of years.  The other one is at my wedding which was April 1991.  It seems recent even if it might not be.

You were correct that Daddy worked most of his career with the Department of Interior and much of that with the Bureau of Mines.  His title was Staff Engineer although his degree was in Geology.  He loved rock specimens and there are many beautiful samples on display at my mother's house.

When my father retired in 1985 they moved from Washington, DC to Roanoke, VA.  My Dad said he always wanted to retire to that area of the country after having done field work in the area very early in his career.  At the time I was living there too and working for General Electric but other career opportunities and marriage took me away and eventually moved me back to the DC area.

Daddy loved sitting on his front porch or deck and just looking at the mountains.  He was a die hard Mountaineer fan to the very end.  He has one grandson who is named for him and was very excited at the fact that he is playing freshman high school football.  Sadly Daddy never got to see him in uniform but we all know that he would be very proud of his grandson, George.

Thank you for calling my mother.  She is very lonely in Roanoke.  She doesn't socialize much so she is very alone now.  I believe that your call, as well as many of other kind calls and letters lift her spirits greatly.

Sincerely,
Pam (Fish) Henry

Hello

Nice to hear from you.  My Mom, Tillie Sponseller, was moved to an assisted living community in Mar 06.  She lives at Elcromft Assisted Living, 60 Paceline Circle, Xenia Ohio 45385.  It has been a rough year for my mom.  Her oldest son and my older brother, Robert M. Sponseller, passed away in Jan 09.  He would have been 57 in late January.  He had been sick for quite some time with heart disease and diabetes.  My mom had a bad fall in Jun and a week later she suffered a mild stroke that has impaired her speech and memory.  She is doing a little better now.  I plan to see her in a little bit.  I will tell her that you contacted me.  I'm sure she will be thrilled to know that her high school family is still thinking about her.

You can definitely contact me.  My phone number is 937-754-1160.

Thank you, Sherri May

Subject: Back Surgery Update

For guidance in the event that you need and choose to take my route, today is two weeks from major back surgery for me, and I am doing great. Off pain meds for a week, I am driving and walking with no apparent symptoms of my severe lumbar stenosis, which for me caused debilitating leg numbness, severly curtailing my walking, or even standing. Some nominal discomfort at the point of the 5/6 inch incision exists, but that's it. I regret only that I waited several years to get this relief. Feel free to seek my advice on any and all aspects of the procedure. Best wishes to all.

July 5, 2008
SUBJECT: Another WI Class '47 Reunion or NOT????
Fellow WI Classmates:
I hope everyone had a meaningful and joyful as possible 4th of July. After talking to several committee members we felt it is necessary to soon decide if we are going to have another Class '47 reunion, recognizing it is getting far more difficult for many of us to travel, especially those with different ailments and some having long distances involved.
We want to get our classmate's opinion and we will make our decision based upon your responses to us. If the majority of those responding indicate they WOULD attend another reunion in either 2009 or 2010 sometime between June and September we will start assembling cost , location and other pertinent reunion details and then send that info out to you and others by slowmail for your further decisions. It would be our intent to have the reunion somewhere in the Greater Clarsburg/Bridgeport/Weston area and we would use the surplus reunion funds of about $1000 to reduce the cost of food and other common expenses that apply to all attendees. We believe that by reducing the common costs those classmates who live in or somewhere near the reunion area and those that are able to travel might be better able to financially afford to attend. We believe IF there is another reunion this would be the very last Class '47 reunion   If the decision is to have a reunion I am willing to help but I cannot guarantee I could be Chair again as my back pain is far worse and Jean also has her own health problems. Also from our great Clarksburg reunion committee people we have lost Dian Hurley and several other key committee people are ailing right now so we will need some new ACTIVE volunteers.
Please respond soon by email with copies to Hank Kiesel, Fred Brown & me indicating your reunion desires along with any other info which pertain to either having or not having a reunion. Also if we do not have a reunion do you have any opinion on how to best use our remaining class reunion funds.
Thanks for your continuing support and assistance. and Best Wishes to All!!!
Dixon Bewick for your Class Reunion Committee

Fred Brown purposes that we have a Class Reunion every year for the next twenty years.......
At the end of twenty years everyone who attends the last reunion wlll get a equal share of what is left in the Class Treasury.........

Carol & I would certainly like to be able to attend another Class of 47 reunion.  The only reason for our missing the last one in 2007 was my back pain, so I have some idea of what you speak.  I finally had back surgery in November 2007 which solved the most immediate problem, but not all of my back problems.  We would have no strong preference between 2009 or 2010, but I would suspect that all other things being as they are, more class members would be able to attend in 2009 rather than waiting until 2010.

Hello Dick Bewick and
Hello to all of our Class of '47 members and their families, Yes, I am in agreement that we have another Class Reunion, if at all possible.
My choice is Clarksburg, but wherever the majority wants to have the reunion is fine with me.
Thanks to you and all the guys and gals that have volunteered in this worthy undertaking over the years.
Our Class of '47 is a great one.
Frank J Torchia

Greetings from Crescent City, California, where the beautiful, mammoth redwoods meets the beautiful sea, better known as the Pacific. As I write this, we are enjoying the most beautiful day the Lord could possibly provide. It is 75, no wind nor fog. Just the song of the birds can be heard.
Regarding the reunion. I would love to attend and tour Clarksburg and surrounding area once again. My husband and I are enjoying relatively good
health. There are factors involved which would decide if we could make the trip. I would appreciate you keeping me informed if and when you decide to
have another reunion. We would have to make the decision closer to the date.
Thanks for being in touch.

A class reunion in 2009 would be fine with me. Whatever you want to do with
the remaining funds, I will be willing to agree. I cannot help with the plans
due to health reasons. Had double pneumonia in Nov. and triple by-pass surgery
in Feb., so am just beginning to feel a little more like normal. Best wishes.
Bob Danley

we will be very happy to participate in 2009 reunion GLORIA AND ED ROGERS

Dick:  I'm in favor of another reunion, probably the last one.  I would hope to make this one although we all know there are no guarantees.  I think 09 is better than 2010. But If it is to be 09 we need to determine that date and spread the word before folks make long range conflicting reservations. For example for 09 we already have reservations in Jan, March and July, and August is pending.
A date right after and close to the Italian festival might be attractive to those who come from out of town to attend the festival,  and it holds some of the local folks close to home during this period so they would be available.

Best regards, Bill Snyder

Dear Dick,
Thanks for the reunion info. Unfortunately, due to worsening eyesight problems, and other "golden Years" problems too numerous to mention--Barb and I would not be able to attend even if you did decide to hold it.
Thanks for asking.

Hey Partners:
Great News yesterday at Jefferson Pain Center - I now medically qualify for the new pain procedure( Spinal Cord Stimulator) which is where they insert a very small rod in your spine and somehow program it.  You carry a small transformer with you and when pain occurs you turn it on and your pain is gone.  Because of the terrific expense I have to qualify for it not only medically but also through a "Psychilogic Evaluation" which I am having at Jefferson Hospital on August 7, 2008.  If everything goes right I should have the medical procedure done by October 2008 so as I told Dick Tetrick when he called me I should be able to Chair our next reunion which Dick indicates the Clarksburg people are now enthused about having it in 2009.  I am going to have my pain Doctor examine Jean as she has serious pain in her left hip and right shoulder and her physical therapist thinks that if we can get those pain spots relieved that Jean may be able to walk again with "help".
I  will keep you all informed of our medical items as well as details of our reunion responses and I am getting more enthused!!!  Thanks..

fractures of the pelvic.  She is at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown critical.  It will be four
weeks this sunday since she had the fall.  She isn't able to swallow .  Wanted to put her on a feeding tube but she did not want this.  There is no hope for her recovery.  Just a matter of time. Randall is not well and has dementia.  He is so mixed up.  Still thinks Betty will be coming home.  I will keep in touch and let you know what's going on.

Hope all is well with you.  This old age is  for the birds.

Mary Jane,

Betty passed away at 7:15 this evening.  Was at the hospital this afternoon and didn't see
what was keeping her alive.  I know she is at peace.  The family is worn out.  Her daughter
was so good to her mother.  She still has a big problem on her hands with her father and sister.
Say prayers for us all.

Betty did get the roses.  Thanks for your  thoughtfulness.
Don't know any arrangements as they have to wait for her son to get here from Fl.

Will keep in touch,

Patty.

Update on JoAnn Dodds Richardson.......

Dear Friends,  Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas.  Ours was very special and fun with Ann and her two children living with us now.  We all even hate to take down the Christmas tree.
About ten days ago, we learned that my last chemo was not working and my doctor thinks that I have had  all of the chemos which might help me.  So he has decided that I need a couple months break from all chemo. Then we will do some more testing and I will start a  study progrqm with a different type medication.
We have worked it out to go  to Marathon for 6 weeks.  We will fly to Orlando next Monday, the 7th, and spend at least two days with Ron and Nannette in Melbourne before going on to Marathon on the 9th or so (?).  We are planning to stay until Feb. 22nd.  Will try to stay in touch.
Love to all of you.  Happy New Year.   JoAnn and Ron

Lee DeValliere, Pilot; Sgt. Perez, Radio; and one of the squadron's Weather Observers standing in front of Lonesome 'Lil. September 1953.

Hi Hank,
You are right! The "kid pilot" on the left is indeed me! We're getting ready to fly a weather recon mission over the Yellow and East China sea in the B26.
I knew nothing of this picture's existence until a couple of year's ago, when my son was researching the surname DeValliere for my granddaughter. He called and surprised me with, "Dad, check out DeValliere on the net."
It must have been taken by my Navigator, since he is not in the picture`and I suspect he was the one who established the website.
I was stationed in Kimpo, about 15 miles NW of Seoul from May '53 to May '54. The was over in July '53 and I flew 13 combat missions before that. (Commies must have found out I was there! LOL!
The B26 was the "sweetest" airplane I ever flew, ahead even of the 747!
As ever, Lee & Barbara
P.S. How did you ever hit on this?
*****************************************************************************************************************
YO, CLASSMATES.  WHILE BROWSING THE NET, I CAME ACROSS THE ABOVE PHOTO AND CHECKED WITH LEE TO VERIFY THAT IT IS "OUR GUY".  AS YOU CAN SEE BY LEE'S REPLY THAT IT REALLY IS.  JUST THOUGHT YOU WOULD ENJOY A BIT OF HISTORY REGARDING THE KOREAN CONFLICT ERA.

DEAR HANK,

BOB CANNOT WRITE SO I WILL DO IT FOR HIM.
HE IS NOT TOO WELL BUT HE HAD SUCH A BAD STROKE IN '98.
I ALSO HAD A STROKE BUT NOT AS BAD AS HIS.
I SHAKE A LOT SO HARD TO WRITE.
BOB SAW THE CLASS PICTURE AND SMILED BIG.
PLEASE TELL DUANE BAKER THAT WE APPRECIATE IT SO MUCH.
TAKE CARE AND THANKS.

From LeRoy DeValliere to Hank Kiesel

Hi Hank

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Chuck Spellsburg. Fred Brown e-mailed me.
Many of our classmates have gone before us -you were almost among them! Indeed, my own experience in Korea had a few "close calls". Chuck and I were friends at WI and I ran into him in 1953 or 54 in a PX in Tokyo - He called to me from across the room!
I married Betty Quigley - WI class of 1948 - In 1949, went to AF pilot school in 1950 (actually I started to fly in 1946) Flew combat-missions in the Douglas B-26 (a grand airplane) in Korea - went with TWA in New York in 1955.
I have two sons, one a restaurant mgr and lives beside me. The other a United Airlines pilot in Denver. 3 grandchildren.
When I moved here it was a "quiet drinking village, with a fishing problem". Now for 2 1/2 months in the summer it is wall to wall tourists, restaurants, shops, etc.
Betty passed away in1995, and in 2001, I married this lovely lady, who lost her husband in 1992.
We both have eyesight problems, diabetes and high blood pressure. So lead a pretty quiet life.
In the early 70's I renewed my musical interests, and for the next 20 years, I appeared in many concerts, both as pianist and singer.
I managed a concert series here in Ogunquit for 9 years after I retired from flying. Hope this hasn't been boring.

Sincerely,

Lee

We all and that is our total Class '47 Reunion Committee owe you a large THANK YOU for getting Via Veneto to give us a full and proper refund when after two phone calls I had made to their manager and another SR person they were trying hard to only give us back our $250.00 deposit.  Somehow you convinced them to also refund us the 8 extra meals they had overcharged us for Friday & Saturday night dinners.  With your great help I believe we have re-established our Class '47 bank account - right Hank??  Thanks again Dick and I promse not to bother you again about WI Class '47 reunions until our next one in either 2009 or 2010.  Best wishes to all of you.

I thought the Reunion was great but felt someone should have read the list of the deceased. I would have done it because I had a poem to read that was appropriate which I relate below and think it might be OK to put on our Class of 47 page. It is up to you.
Perhaps someone felt it might add a sadness to the reunion, but such is life.

Anyway, here is the Poem:

The Meeting

After so long an absence
At last we meet again:
Does the meeting give us pleasure,
Or does it give us pain?

The tree of life has been shaken,
And but few of us linger now,
Like the Prophet's two or three berries
In the top of the uppermost bough.

We cordially greet each other
In the old familiar tone:
And we think, though we do not say it,
How old and gray he has grown!

We speak of a Merry Christmas
And many a Happy New Year;
But each in his heart is thinking
Of those who are not here.

We speak of friends and their fortunes,
And of what they did and said,
Till the dead alone seem living
And the living alone seem dead.

And alas we hardly distinguish
Between the ghosts and the guests;
And a mist of shadow and sadness
Steals over our merriest jests.

Dear Friends of Dot & Dave McWatters,

This is their daughter Sherry forwarding you the update below. Feel free to respond back and I will make sure Mom gets your messages. Your prayers are greatly needed and appreciated.

God Bless,

Sherry McWatters Boyce.......

Thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers. Unfortunately the surgery did not go well today. The tumor  on Dad's lung at 1 centimeter in January has grown to the size of a  man's fist. It encompassed the whole lower lobe of his lung and had spidered throughout. To make it more complicated and impossible to remove in whole, tendrils of the tumor have wrapped around Dad's blood vessels to his heart. Now we must wait to hear what the cancer doctor recommends and what Dad agrees for treatment. The family pushed Dad into this surgery as he wanted to do nothing. He has a brain disorder too (NPH I think it's called) which gives him migraines, loss of memory and motor functions, which needs surgery too. At least the morphine is keeping his migraines away for now.

This is a time of life we all must face, but I still wanted to be Daddy's little girl and know he is always there for me. I told God I was not ready to send him home, but I could not see him suffer either. So it's God's will what happens next and our family understand we must have faith, that it will be best for Dad, whatever the outcome.   Thank you again for your thoughts and prayers.   God Bless,

Sherry Mc & Kirk

FROM MARY JANE LAURENT POST

Fred,

This is a little different than the usual death notices as it happened in April of 1974.
After graduation Patty Hall and her mother left Clarksburg and moved to Mannington to care for Pat's aging grandparents.   Her plans had been to go to George Washington U. in the fall.

In the fall of 1950 I was walking through Gimbels and literally bumped into her!!!!!! (that was the real 'Miracle on 34th Street'!!!)  Pat was married to an actor,  Hugh Palmerston .  That Christmas my mother came to NY for a visit and Pat's mother was visiting Pat and Hugh.   We had Christmas dinner together in Pat and Hugh's apartment.   We stayed in touch .

I left NY. I was working as a buyer and went back to NY often and would call. By this time she had two adorable little red headed boys, Evan and Garth, probably about 7 and 5 at the time.  Hugh was working in the theatre in San Francisco and they were ready to join him.

Later I began searching for Pat via the computer and found she had died in California in April of 1974 and her mother (also in CA) died in April of 1984.   There were still so many unanswered questions .

Recently I typed the name Hugh Palmerston into the 'search box' and there was a Bio of Hugh written at the time of his death in 2000. They had a daughter, Jennifer, in 1969 and Pat died four years later at age 44.  Hugh was survived by their three children and seven grandchildren.  I looked for her for so long and now that I know they are together I wanted all of you to know too.
Hank called me less than 3 weeks ago with talk of a 60th reunion.   I had not had a word with him in almost 60 years and I am so glad that he was on hand to see me through this painful discovery.   I told him I would make this short and this is SHORT for me!!!!!

To All Of Our Dear Friends,

Well if I don't get a Christmas card out to all of you, this may help you to understand why---My darling husband was only joking when he said that he had enough of Florida---He has come out of retirement and back to work in sunny FL.  He has already left and will be there for about one year working on a new waste water treatment plant in the St. Pete area.  I am leaving this Thursday to join him.  Since it's just for a year we have decided that we're going to stay in our small travel trailer.  It's a good thing that we like each  other.  I just got my FL license and will probably start working soon.I think I might like to take a short time off since my last day of work here is also Thursday--I'll work until 9am(for a meeting) and then leave.  Our new mailing address there will be: Hal and Sharon Klieves
                                                                                                                                                  8500 Ulmerton Rd.Lot 302
                                                                                                                                                   Largo, FL  33771
We will be keeping our same cell phone numbers hope that you will keep in touch that way since we won't have e-mail for a while.  My sister, Carolyn and her husband Phil will be house sitting for us and they should always be able to locate us.  Hope you all have a great holiday and take care

Subject: DON HOYLMAN

DON HOYLMAN (FROM OUT OF OUR PAST)

I FINALLY MADE PHONE CONTACT WITH DON HOYLMAN AND LEARNED A LOT THAT I DID NOT KNOW BEFORE.

DON DID NOT GRADUATE WITH US IN 1947.  BEFORE FINISHING HIGH SCHOOL, DON ENLISTED IN THE MARINES IN 1946.
HE SERVED THREE YEARS AND THEN WAS DISCHARGED.  AFTER COMING BACK TO CLARKSBURG, DON RECEIVED HIS HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA VIA A PROGRAM AT SALEM COLLEGE, AND THEN ON TO WV WESLEYAN AND FAIRMONT STATE, BUT NOT A GRADUATE..

DON NOW LIVES IN FAIRMONT AND IS STILL WORKING EVERY DAY AT HIS ENGINEERING COMPANY AND HOLDING COMPANY.

I SENT DON A COPY OF THE CHURCH LEAGUE BASKETBALL TEAM OF WHICH HE WAS A MEMBER.  HE DID RECOGNIZE
MOST OF THE GUYS FROM OUR CLASS (i.e.,SECKMAN, DEEM, MORRIS, DENTZER, KIESEL).  THAT IS A FAIRLY GOOD MEMORY SINCE THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN AROUND 1942 / 1943.  STILL ON THE SUBJECT OF BASKETBALL, WHILE IN THE MARINES AND STATIONED AT PARIS ISLAND, SC, DON RECALLS HIS MARINE BASKETBALL TEAM PLAYING AGAINST JACK TETRICKS NAVY TEAM WHILE JACKS SHIP WAS AT THAT NAVAL STATION. I THINK THAT DONS MARINE TEAM HAD DAVE STEINDLER PLAYING FOR THEM.  SOME OF YOU SPORTS FANS MAY RECALL THAT DAVE STEINDLER WAS A 1946 GRADUATE OF ELKINS HS AND WAS A GREAT FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL PLAYER FOR THE TIGERS, AND ALSO PLAYED BASKETBALL FOR WVU AFTER HIS MARINE TOUR OF DUTY.

DON ASKED ABOUT DICK TETRICK AND JACK HARTMAN SINCE DICK AND JACK WORKED FOR TEXACO AND MADE BUSINESS CALLS FOR DONS MINING RELATED JOBS.   (LEFTY, NOTE DONS EMAIL ADDRESS AND EMAIL HIM).

DON ALSO RECALLS STANLEY CAIN MOVING TO FAIRMONT IN HIS SENIOR YEAR AND PLAYING FOR FAIRMONT WEST AND DID A GREAT JOB FOR BIZ DAWSON.

I ALSO LEARNED THAT CHARLIE KYLE FROM OUR CLASS IS A COUSIN OF DONS.  DON REPORTS THAT CHARLIE IS HAVING SOME HEALTH PROBLEMS.

IM SURE THAT THERE IS MORE THAT DON AND I CHATTED ABOUT WHICH HAS SLIPPED MY MIND, BUT IT WAS GREAT RENEWING THIS FRIENDSHIP AFTER 58 YEARS.  I TOLD DON THAT WE WILL KEEP HIM INFORMED OF ANY FUTURE
GET-TO-GETHERS OF THE CLASS OF 1947 AND HE WILL BE INVITED.

From: hankster@indy.rr.com(Hank Kiesel) Date: Thu, Jan 20, 2005, 7:35pm
Subject: OC AND MARY STEWART UPDATE

I HAD A SHORT PHONE CHAT WITH ORAL STEWART TODAY.  THEY ARE BOTH HANGING IN THERE BUT JUST WENT THROUGH A BAD WINTER STORM.  LAST WEEK, MUNCIE WAS HIT WITH A SEVER ICE STORM WHICH DAMAGED A LOT OF TREES AND POWER LINES.  MUNCIE WAS WITHOUT ELECTRICAL POWER FOR EIGHT DAYS.  IN ADDITION TO THAT, HOMES SUPPLIED BY THE MUNCIE WATER COMPANY WERE ALSO WITHOUT WATER.

OC HAPPENED TO HAVE TWO GASOLINE/ELECTRIC GENERATORS AND HOOKED UP ONE FOR HIS HOUSE AND LET HIS NEIGHBOR USE THE OTHER.  (SURE SOUNDS LIKE WHAT A WEST VIRGINIA GUY WOULD DO IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT).

ORVAL WAS ABLE TO GET ENOUGH ELECTRICAL ENERGY TO OPERATE MARY'S HOSPITAL BED, PLUS OPERATE A COUPLE OF HEATERS AND PROVIDE SOME LIGHTING.  OC HAD TO TRUCK IN BOTTLED WATER ON A REGULAR BASIS TO FLUSH THE JOHNS AND OTHER HOME USES.  HE WAS SURE BUSY KEEPING THE FUEL (REG. GAS) IN THE TANK TO DRIVE THE GENERATOR.  I COULD SENSE THAT HE WAS TIRED, BUT HE WAS PLEASED THAT MARY DID SO WELL UNDER THOSE CONDITIONS.  AS MOST OF YOU MAY KNOW, MARY IS CONFINED TO THE BED DUE TO A STROKE SHE HAD A YEAR OR TWO AGO.

KEEP OC AND MARY IN YOUR PRAYERS.

SINCERELY
