I like Ike
A quote from one of my favorite "bleeding heart liberal" models: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." President Dwight D. Eisenhower

Wars affect everyone, no?.. and the costs of maintaining the biggest war machine on earth takes our taxes AND saps our willingness to perceive a world without an arms race. It's interesting, and laudable, that prez Bush sees a reason to bring some troops home (or, more accurately, not fully replace those rotated out, which is a bit different from "withdrawing troops"). While the expenditure of trillions may have "kept us safe", it may also have inured us to any sense of fellowship with others around the world. Seeing potential enemies all around certainly isn't conducive to feelings of brotherhood. There's also a tone of hypocrisy present when our gov't condemns other nations who consider pursuing the creation of weapons that we have, & to which we give credit for our secure situation! If we were willing to divest ourselves of certain classes of weaponry we might be better received when we decry others' pursuits of these same modalities. Proposing that new classes of nukes be researched and developed also seems counterproductive... Every time ANYbody develops a 'new' weapon, it isn't long until someone ELSE come up with an equivalent. Let's get off that spiral staircase to heaven! ^..^
